This MSc in Counselling and Psychotherapy is designed to help you build strong connections between academic theory and real-world practice. It combines classroom-based teaching with the opportunity to complete a supervised placement in an appropriate therapeutic setting. Assessment on this programme is designed to allow you to demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and professional competencies essential for counselling and psychotherapy practice. You will be assessed through a variety of methods, including written assignments, case-based work, presentations, and practical or reflective tasks. In addition, you will complete a substantial independent research project in a specialist area of your choice.

Throughout the course, ongoing formative activities and feedback will support your learning and development, helping you to integrate theory with practice and prepare for work in professional therapeutic settings.

Independent study is an important part of the programme. You will be expected to complete research, homework tasks, and group work in your own time, and self-directed learning will be key to your success. Tutors will provide guidance on effective study strategies throughout your course.

Assessment methods at GBS are reviewed on an annual basis and may be updated in response to student feedback, developments in the subject area, or recommendations from an External Examiner. An External Examiner is an independent academic from another Higher Education Institution who helps ensure academic standards are maintained.

Entry Requirements (All Applicants):
Applicants must have English language proficiency at B2 level, a UK GCSE at grade 4/C or above, a previous UK degree, or a Secure English Language Test (SELT) if an international degree has been completed. All candidates will also be required to attend both an admissions interview and an academic interview.

Degree Route:
Applicants should hold a 2:2 degree or equivalent qualification in healthcare, counselling, psychology, or a related subject, awarded within the last five years in the UK or a majority English-speaking country.

In addition, applicants must demonstrate at least six months of counselling or psychotherapy-related experience gained through professional or voluntary roles within the last three years.

A completed application form is required, including a 500-word personal statement.

Work Experience Route:
Applicants should have relevant professional experience in a related setting and at least three years of counselling or psychotherapy-related experience through professional or voluntary roles by the start of the academic year.

A completed application form is required, including a 500-word personal statement. At a later stage of the application process, candidates will also be asked to complete a 1000-word reflective task outlining their interest in the course.
